Hamilton Heartbreaker

A notable game was held in the CFL tonight, not only for its tribute to the late Ron Lancaster, but also for how depressing it must be right now to cheer for Hamilton. I made that mistake this evening, since I had no stake in who won tonight I went with the underdog. They didn’t fail to live up to my poor expectations. In the last minute of the game, Hamilton had the ball deep in Winnipeg territory, and flubbed a snap for the game tying field goal. Final score 25-22 Winnipeg. At least I wasn’t the angry guy yelling, “I want my money back,” which could clearly be heard on TSN; Possibly Marcel Bellefeuille (if he had to pay to get in)?

I then watched something even more depressing, “Camp Rock” [4/10] a mindless movie vehicle to sell soundtrack albums. “Don’t fit in! Stand out! Watch CAMP ROCK…” is the tag line on the website for the movie. Trust me, Disney doesn’t make movies for kids that stand out. Fairy tales are about conformity, no?

Life and Debt - Globalization and Jamaica

“Life and Debt - Globalization and Jamaica” [6/10] I watched this after seeing it on The Galloping Beaver. It explains some of the root causes of Jamaican poverty. Food security is something Canadians should be very concerned about as well. I don’t see most of our political parties taking the issue as seriously as I do.

Last night I watched “Juno” [8/10], a quirky movie about teen pregnancy. It has really quirky music in it as well.

The Last Saskatchewan Pirate spotted?

IMG_3047

I saw the Jolly Roger on Regina’s mighty shores! I didn’t tremble any though.

ADDED:
Friday night Jesse and I watched “Shake Hands With the Devil” [9/10], a chilling docudrama about modern genocide as seen by Canadian peace keepers in the 1990s. I’d seen the first half of the movie on an Air Canada flight in January, and got to see the whole thing now. I have yet to see Hotel Rawanda, another movie about the hundreds of thousands of people killed by ethnic violence in the tiny African nation.

Dion Shines as Harper Whines

I was really impressed by Dion’s lunchtime speech today (aside from his ESL grammar of course). He certainly was showing some charisma, and was putting Harper’s games playing in context for the media. It’s clear that soon again Harper’s Conservatives will attack Dion and Green Party leader May for a “backroom” deal in their respective riding contests, but Harper is willing to wheel and deal with Dion over the PHONE on the fate of the current parliament!

CTV has the video.

It’s not hard to see why Dion scoffs at Harper’s claim that other parties are preventing parliament from working. The Conservatives are the ones who are preventing parliament from working, because it’s busy weeding out Conservative corruption (In-and-Out, Cadscam) and ethical problems (10%ers, Bernier). Scott provides a link to why an early election call is preposterous if Harper wants to save face.

Yesterday was quite different. After I had the afternoon off anyway, and no plans, I called up some friends and we went 5 pin bowling for a couple hours. I averaged about 176 after 44 frames, with a couple of >200 games. My car appears to be sucking gas, so either a Grand Prix sucks (likely) or someone is siphoning my tank and that’s why it gets just 18MPG in the city driving I’m doing. I could almost see the needle going down yesterday while driving between the library and bowling alley. Then it went back up again. Accuracy is not important in gas gauges, just as it isn’t for toner cartridge level meters or progress bars.

We wrapped up the night of cooking an unintentionally vegetarian (almost vegan) meal partly from my garden (and mostly from Superstore) at my place, with “Mission Impossible III” [9/10].

Green Thumb Sunday - Kohlrabi ; Dragon Boats

I picked my only kohlrabi on Saturday. I ate some of it raw, and tried frying the rest. It’s not my favourite veggie, but it helped fill me up for supper. I didn’t remember the top leaves are edible if cooked, so by the time I found out by surfing the web, they were already left behind in the garden.

I finished watching “Mousehunt” [7/10], and saw “Mission Impossible II” [8/10] for the first time on Friday. For Saturday I went for a long bike ride, stopping at several garage sales to haggle, and picked up a selection of some very useful stuff [Brita tanks, camera memory, exercise ball-tube, book] for under $8 in total. (And yes John, I did end up blogging about my new Brita tanks like we talked about Saturday.)

Along the way I stopped at Jesse’s and watched Olympic volleyball, then finished my ride with a stop at the dragon boat races just before they wrapped up. The team names are hilarious, including the “Civil Serpents”, “Soggy Bottom Buoys”, “Wascanimals”, and I think I even heard the names “Ship Kickers” and “Dragon Your Assets”.

My remaining evening at home could be described as cooking, cleaning, and TV watching. Oooh, exciting.

Watts Towers - LA Oddity

I found this story of the hand built Watts Towers really interesting, and learned a bit about American history in the process.

I am really considering making one of these long monopods, I can think of so many uses for a camera on a stick.. all of them legal!

Here’s an interview with a Regina fixture that makes Canada’s best sports blog of 2007 an extra bit interesting.

In the last few days I’ve rewatched “Hitch” [8/10], and for the first time saw “Employee of the Month” [7/10]. Jessica Simpson sure didn’t have many lines despite being a main character.

Man on a Wire at the WTC

I found this bit of history really interesting. It sounds like a good movie to check out. I think a lot of people long for a time when the WTC towers were less than a defining moment of our thus far brief millennium. We’d like them to have been a backdrop to historic achievement like that of a juggler from France who walked between the top of the towers, and not historic mayhem that no one can forget.
