Apologies, Saskboy - I thought I left this comment several days ago but I guess it didn't take.
Re your request left at my place for a facebook link :
I'm not on facebook so can't help you there but I did receive a comment right after yours from longtime activist in this isue Thom Duggan of the Coalition to Stop Lake Dumping.
They're setting up a website and looking to start a blogcorps on this so I took the liberty of submitting your name along with mine.
Further info from TommyD in his comment <a href="http://creekside1.blogspot.com/2008/06/16-lakes-to-be-reclassified-as-toxic.html" rel="nofollow">here</a>

Alexander, good for you for having the courage to speak your mind. Unfortunately for you, your mind needs to enter the realm of the living.

Mining is an essential practice for the development of our world. What isn't essential is the containment of tailings in nearby exposed waterways, on public land, with no commitment from the profiteers that they will care-take the mess.

"Yes we have to protect our environment and SOMETIMES this means putting mined rock into natural depressions because it is better for the environment."

I could not have concocted a more contorted logic if I tried. I'm frankly disappointed that someone would, but am not surprised. Obviously it's BEST if the mined rock stays where it is, out of our natural fresh water supply. To balance that fact with the WANT we have for mined minerals, we need to find a non-toxic way of dealing with the tailings or accept that many plants, animals, and people will become sick and die.

Obviously you can live with that life dying because of the wants of humans. I'm less certain that we are acting responsibly.

I think that your perspective is self centered, and selfish, and some would even say ghoulish. There are 33 million people in Canada; only one lake for every 10 people. How's that for getting perspective?

If you were one of the hypothetical 160+ people to have their lake poisoned, would you have the same perspective? Don't you feel the way you do because you have only your perspective, and are unwilling to look at it from the perspective of those directly affected by your callous attitude?

Those lakes ARE in MY backyard. They are Canadian lakes and I'm Canadian. Get some pride in your country, man!

The children do have rage. Rage against silly statements like yours. Mining is essential to the health and well being of our children and their children. Yes we have to protect our environment and SOMETIMES this means putting mined rock into natural depressions because it is better for the environment. There are more than 3.1 million lakes in Canada; get some perspective.

Kateland, would it surprise you to hear that our coastal cities like Halifax dump untreated sewage straight into the ocean? Yet another subsidy to coastal cities, who are abusing their own coast line. It is indeed nefarious, as you say.

Thanks MoS.

It certainly is a non-partisan disaster in the making. Poisons don't care about a party card when they kill you.

The entire situation is revolting. I see nothing about this that I, as a right-leaning voter, could lend my support to. Kateland is absolutely right to note the corporate welfare aspect, as well.

This is a non-partisan issue.

Good post, the only thing I would add is the government is offering public property as a freebie to a private company. There is no reason why waste management should be at the expense of citizens or the environment. This is corporate welfare at its most nefarious.
