Press Releases - Spoon Fed the News

I have a couple press releases in my inbox that I thought I’d share. One is about the Sask Greens, and their candidate for the Cumberland riding. The next is about an exciting movie project in Regina. If the Greens win Cumberland, they’ll have to make a movie about that triumph too!

GREEN PARTY OF SASKATCHEWAN ANNOUNCES PROGRESSIVE POLICY FOR THE NORTH

For Release: Thursday, May-29-08 – La Ronge, Sk

The Green Party of Saskatchewan has announced Tory McGregor as their candidate for the Cumberland by-election called for June 25.

McGregor is the 28 year old Metis Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Saskatchewan (GPS). Although McGregor is not from the constituency, the GPS intends to increase its presence and popular support in the North by establishing a local group to increase awareness of environmental issues.

The GPS believes strongly that the North is a unique ecosystem which is under increasing environmental stress.

The Green Party of Saskatchewan places a strong emphasis on protecting the environment and believes it can be managed sustainably with proper and adequate consultation and regulation.

The GPS has three main policy recommendations for Cumberland.

The GPS proposes all agreements regarding the development of natural resources guarantees, through binding legislation, that First Nations and Metis governing bodies are full legal partners with industry and government. All agreements will be monitored by an Environmental Review Commission.

The second GPS policy for Cumberland would mandate an Environmental Review Commission to oversee natural resource development. The Commission would ensure that development plans by industry and government incorporate local traditional ecological knowledge with conventional scientific study.

For example, local residents are alarmed by a significant drop in the Walleye population in Montreal Lake. There is currently a restrictive limit on Walleye. This places additional social strain on communities who rely on fish to feed their families. Presently there is no official governing body studying this alarming reality on behalf of the community.

The third GPS policy for Cumberland and for the entire northern half of Saskatchewan would be to move the offices of the Deputy Minister of Northern Affairs and two Assistant Deputy Ministers from the Department of First Nations and Metis Relations to La Ronge. All politics is local and Regina must acknowledge that constant direct participation in Northern affairs must be conducted on site to ensure representation and accountability.

The GPS will be meeting with as many residents of Cumberland during the campaign. The GPS believes in economic development but development must be sustainable based on sound ecological principles.

And a Stephen King film is being shot in Regina!

DOLAN¹S CADILLAC FILMING IN CANADA

Christian Slater, Emmanuelle Vaugier and Wes Bentley bring Stephen King
short story to the big screen.

May 29, 2008 (Regina, SK) DOLAN¹S CADILLAC, a feature film adaptation of
Stephen King¹s acclaimed short story, began shooting in Regina, Canada and
Moose Jaw, Canada on Monday, May 26.

The film stars Christian Slater (Bobby, Windtalkers), Emmanuelle Vaugier
(CSI: NY, Two and a Half Men) and Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Ghost
Rider).

Based on one of Stephen King¹s most suspenseful short stories, Dolan¹s
Cadillac is a psychological thriller in the vein of The Dead Zone and The
Secret Window.

Tom Robinson (Wes Bentley) is a peaceful, law-abiding schoolteacher until
his wife Elizabeth (Emmanuelle Vaugier) accidentally witnesses a murder.
Jimmy Dolan (Christian Slater), Las Vegas¹ most ruthless and untouchable mob
boss, never leaves behind a witness.

Haunted by the ghost of his wife, Robinson transforms himself into an
obsessed vengeance machine, pushing himself beyond the breaking point of
mind, body and spirit. When the two men finally meet deep in the heart of
the desert, Dolan¹s Cadillac climaxes with an amazing test of wills the
ultimate duel. The Cadillac, which has been Dolan¹s armor, may just as
easily become his tomb.

Rhonda Baker (The Messengers, Terry Gilliam¹s Tideland) and Alain Gagnon
(Snake Eyes, The Sum of All Fears) will produce.

Kevin DeWalt (Walled In, Hybrid) of Minds Eye Entertainment and Ellen Wander
(Big Spender, Say Nothing) of Film Bridge International will executive
produce the $9 million film.

The action-based thriller started shooting in and around Regina, SK (Canada)
and Moose Jaw, SK (Canada) on May 26, 2008 and will wrap production in June
after 26 shooting days.

In a departure from his recent efforts in television, Canadian Jeff Beesley
(Little Mosque on the Prairie, Corner Gas) will return to feature films to
direct this edgy thriller, based on Richard Dooling’s (Kingdom Hospital)
script adapted from Stephen King’s short story, Dolan’s Cadillac an
ominous story that will keep audiences in suspense in its transfer from the
page to the screen.

“The audience is in for a treat,” says executive producer Kevin DeWalt.
“We’ve assembled an incredibly talented cast and a highly skilled crew and
are ready to deliver a quality film that will exceed audience expectations.”
Film Bridge International acquired the rights for international sale.
³The transition from page to screen will not disappoint,² promises executive
producer Ellen Wander. ³This story is one of vengeance, Stephen King style.²

And I heard a rumour that the Backstreet Boys might be coming to Regina. I know at least one person very excited by the possibility.
