Another “old friend” has turned to ashes. I never got a chance to see the elevator that burned.
I did however witness one burning in Wood Mountain just about eleven years ago. The heat (even with it nearly grain-empty) was so intense that you could feel it from a block away. It was struck by lightning, twice within minutes of each other. I was listening to an audio tape, and the paper flickered and actually damaged the tape in that spot. There was nothing the fire department could do to get equipment up to the fire in the roof, so they set up a perimeter, and saved a house with burning debris falling onto it.
I borrowed a video camera from a neighbour in town, and the resulting video ended up as a clip on the CKCK News the next day.
Still with us, unlike the one that burned:

-The oldest around, in Fleming, SK.
ADDED:
Foam Lake had a fire not too long ago.

- The Pioneer orange part is gone now.

I hate it when this happens. I hope someone was able to make good records of it before it went. Our history is so transitory. :-(
