Witch Camps and Old Folks Homes
Are old folks homes a human rights violation? It’s an interesting question. Nichole asks Africans what they think about Witch Camps.

Are you joking?
Sigh…I’ll remember this the next time I see the exhausted old ladies on my street forced to take care of young grandchildren as some sort of free daycare service, and then go on another site visit to to yet another newly opened senior’s retirement center, filled with light and activities, and happy people who actually get to put their feet up and relax, play some cards, have a few drinks! Gee, what a concept.
I am so sick of the misrepresentation of nursing homes and retirement homes. The media make them all sound like orphanages filled with elderly Oliver Twists, when nothing could be further from the truth. Can you find a crappy one? Sure….I can find crappy anything, but comparing them to DIRT HUTS?
Have any of these twits ever been in an actual nursing home? Yeah, I thought not.

Aurelia, nursing homes are a form of segregation. Whether or not it’s justified I’m somewhat neutral on, because there are benefits, but it’s also potentially problematic. It’s perhaps the only way to effectively deal with aging and sick people, especially if they don’t have family willing to care for them. But it’s useful to look at other societies, and compare how they stack up to each other, to see if there’s anything to learn.
