I don’t suppose it’s come up for gardeners too much yet, but Monsanto has flexed its corporate might a great step too far with farmers the last decade (or longer). Percy took them on, on more than one occasion, and came away smelling like a rose. His latest victory is an important one. $660 isn’t as important as the win.
The seeds of the earth (and those manufactured by humans) should never be subject to patents.

There is a growing “heritage seed” movement here in the Ottawa area, a number of seed shows happen every spring, and there is a lot of trade (and out right give away if someone wants to get started) among growers who refuse to buy into the “dead seed” concept Monsanto is pushing.
There will always be grassroots folk who don’t buy into the corporate growing ideal, and they will ultimately be what hauls societies short sighted arses out of the fire.

On the topic of heritage seeds or heirloom seeds, I’ve read that companies like Monsanto are trying to move in and take over there too. They want to control as much “life” as they can, if only to wipe out the competition. Which just means it’s that much more important for people to grow rare varieties of plants and raise dwindling livestock species as well. Not as confrontational as court battles, but still its own kind of important activism.
