Dr. Lynda Haverstock to present the 2008 Stapleford Lecture

The Honourable Dr. Lynda Haverstock will present a talk entitled “Citizenship, Governance and Duty” for the 2008 Stapleford Lecture.

“As Canadians, we enjoy rights, freedoms and a quality of life unimaginable to billions of people the world over. Still, we take for granted our enormous bounty and we do so at our own peril,” says Haverstock. She will deliver the annual Stapleford lecture on Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Education Auditorium at the University of Regina.

Haverstock began her role as President and CEO of Tourism Saskatchewan in June, 2007. As a highly recognized and admired figure throughout Saskatchewan, Canada, and internationally for her academic achievements, innovative ideas, and contributions to politics, Haverstock served her home province as Saskatchewan’s 19th Lieutenant Governor from 2000 to 2006. Haverstock is a member of the National Committee of the RCMP Heritage Centre, an advisor to the president of the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, and serves on the Board of Directors for Shaw Communications.

Haverstock is the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the Order of Canada. She has received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Regina, Royal Roads University in Victoria, and most recently, Queen’s University in Kingston.

In 1989, Dr. Elsie Maude Stapleford established an endowment for a lecture series at the University of Regina in honour of her parents, Dr. Ernest W. Stapleford and Mrs. Maude Stapleford. Ernest Stapleford was the president of Regina College from 1915 to 1934, and principal from 1934 to 1937. Maude Stapleford was active in the community, taking a particular interest in the arts and in the advancement of the rights of women and children.

Each year the lecture touches on one or more of the following areas: human justice, the status of women, the education and care of young children, the rights of disadvantaged groups, and the history and art of Saskatchewan or Canada.
