This is just sick. I’d have a hard time controlling my anger at the heckling of someone debating for a man’s LIFE.
NDP MP Thomas Mulcair is obviously passionate about this case, yet needed to find additional restraint. Still, in a case this serious, perhaps a little frothing is what is needed to shake ghouls like Gerald Keddy, the Tory MP for South Shore-St. Margarets, out of their self centered moral slumber. Judging by Keddy’s low blow comments about “anger management” and being scared for “women and children” after the incident, it didn’t work.

Dude, Mulcair broke every rule of parlimentary decorum. Not that I would expect anything less from the NDP…Canada’s fruitbat party. He would have been wiser to accuse Keddy of looking at gay porn on his laptop. ;)

Hey Jim …. a little heavy on the ant- NDP bias there pal! How about Conservative Party Deputy Speake!!!
“Deputy Speaker Royal Galipeau MUST RESIGN!
Conservative MP and Deputy Speaker Royal Galipeau was behaving extremely badly in the House of Commons on Wednesday and apparently laid hands on a fellow Member of Parliament while in a loud rage. He admits he lost his cool, but denies he behaved in an intimidating manner.”

A gay Iranian in Britain is also facing deportation to Iran where he will almost certainly be hanged. He lost his court case for asylum. you can read about it here.
I for one think we should grant asylum to both the guy in the article you linked too and this Iranian. Killing them simply because they are gay is insane. Let them live their lives, they are not hurting anyone.

To start, I get your argument and agree that he should get to stay.
BUT:
Current laws, to my (layman’s) understanding is that we don’t deport if you are expected to be put to death upon return to your home country, which he is not. (I’m not going to argue the 20 yr sentence as I agree that’s insane, I’m talking OUR laws.)
IF:
We let him stay on grounds of cruel & unusual punishment vs. the death sentence, what gates are we opening for BS applicants? HUGE, IMHO. Which is the problem, and why they are likely looking for “proof of being gay.”
Crappy situation for all concerned.

I agree with Candace 100%. But I’ll also add that the NDP is showing its usual inconsistency and hypocrisy. They seem to be very selective as to which oppressed people they will champion and the criteria for selection seems to be whether or not they can use the particular instance of oppression to advantage at home.
If it’s the murder of 300,000 Iraqis by Saddam Hussein, for example, oh no, that’s none of our concern. If it’s murder of gays and beating women and children and harbouring of al Qaeda in Afghanistan, that’s no reason to intervene. And THAT really sucks.
They also can’t conceive that an asylum seeker may very well be a BS application. Given the voluminous evidence from testimonials about the truth of these sorts of crimes against (primarily Muslim) humanity in Ba’athist Iraq and Taleban ruled Afghanistan one wonders how the NDP can so easily jump in in support of this case when it’s curiouis just how one proves he’s gay? Evidence just doesn’t count to the Dippers. What does count is if the case has some element that can be used to advantage.

Jason, that story is especially worrying, because I have a friend who is now Canadian, and would face the same fate if he hadn’t left Iran.

I still don’t understand why we just don’t let everyone in….really we have lots of room, what’s the big deal? We get so pissy about being selective, meanwhile our immigration and refugee levels are at the lowest they’ve been in years. During the periods of history where we let anybody in, we had some of the largest and most productive economic growth ever seen.
I still think borders are just another way for scared white rich people to keep brown people out. And now gay people.

Even if he isn’t put to death officially, it’s like this stupid wink-wink-nudge-nudge crap that we all seem to do about child molesters going to prison. We KNOW they are going to get mistreated, or even killed just for ending up in jail.
And you’re right Aurelia, it’s got a lot to do with the themes Michael Moore examined in Bowling for Columbine. Seen that delightfully accurate short cartoon in the middle of it? That’s what’s happening in Canada with the Conservatives in power.
