Composting in the Winter isn’t easy. I haven’t really figured out an ideal system. The ice cream pail of compostables under the sink is not easily emptied, given that my balcony door likes to freeze shut, so access to my composter isn’t really handy. I did manage to thaw the door out with a floor fan and towel to soak up the moisture, however. Then the scraps freeze outside and don’t really start to break down until Spring.
Ashley got me a community garden plot in the city, so we’ll have a place to plant in the spring. Canada’s groundhogs predict an early spring, so I’ll be planting sooner rather than later.

Good luck on your new garden plot!
Seems that frozen scraps are a better alternative than having to keep them inside for any length of time., but then, if it’s that much trouble to get the door open, I think I’d just leave them in the house!

I just fill up my Urban Compost Tumbler in the winter and let the scraps freeze. Then in the spring I move it out into the sun and the black plastic helps absorb heat to thaw out all the compostables.
