I was checking my bank balance, and spreading ’round the cash a little (paying bills), and noticed that the ABM charge for when I went to a non-PC/CIBC bank machine was only $1.50 when I knew the machine said it would be $2.00. “Sweet,” I thought to myself, I should congratulate PC for having such an awesome “no fees” account that they take a 50¢ hit when someone uses an ABM that gouges them. Then I looked more closely at my statement and saw that the $2 charge for the ABM was ALSO incorporated into the withdrawl.
Jan 18, 2008 ABM INTERAC CHARGE $1.50
Jan 18, 2008 ABM INTERAC WITHDRAWAL $82.00
GRRRR, $3.50 to take my cash out of the bank? Thanks for reminding me why I NEVER take cash out of anything except the “correct” bank machines.

In other personal minutiae, Ginger got her shots yesterday, and I changed the battery in my Timex Data Link watch for about only the second time since 1997. Best..watch..ever. I’ve changed the band on the watch more than the batteries. Now I need to hook up a CRT monitor to send some phone numbers to it via the bar code reader built into the wireless watch.
UPDATE: Tonight Ashley and I watched a movie with family. “Flushed Away” [8/10] was a surprisingly entertaining cartoon about a mouse who goes on an unexpected sewer quest. I also got given a watch band for my Timex, yippee!

Something similar happened to me several years ago. I signed up for an account with CIBC and they asked me if I wanted overdraft protection, so I said sure. They explained that I would be allowed to go in the hole rather than have a cheque bounce. What they didn’t tell me was the service charge that would be levied for the privilege and, stupid me, I never asked. I had an overdraft only once, since I tend to be quite paranoid about allowing my account to get too low. That one time I was overdrawn by about 28 cents or some such pittance. That’s when I found out what the privilege cost me. They dinged me $5.00 for being 28 cents overdrawn. Needless to say, I moved my account to another institution.

Now, now, it is no time to complain about bank fees. The poor old banks are loosing billions thanks to the American mortgage meltdown.
But feel free to complain about telecoms, they are just gready.

I hate the CIBC. I opened my first account with them when I first came and:
1) They keep on holding my paycheck for 2 weeks, even though I had been in the same steady job for over a year, and it’s my ?%$# paycheck!
2) They refused to open me a saving account because, I quote, “I was an immigrant”. Seriously.
My account was pretty good (I’m one of these annoying person who ay the bills way before the due date and pay off the credit card every month). Anyway, I went to Scotiabank after that and found the service better and fees lower as well.
This wasn’t a sponsored post ;-)

If you watch the pennies, the pounds take care of themselves…

I almost got PC/CIBC overdraft “protection”, but they had me stay on the line for about 5 minutes filling out their forms, then told me they denied me because I hadn’t had my current job long enough. Grrrrrr.

Those loose billionaires are welcome to lose a few bucks here and there. Easy come, easy go.

Zhu, I’ve never banked directly with CIBC, and likely won’t, but they operate the PC account I have which has good interest and usually reasonable fees. I’d use ING for everything except they don’t do chequing.
Check out the story about held paycheques here… http://lifeofbrex.blogspot.com/2006/01/what-would-you-expect.html
It’s the best one I know, and the best bank story I know too.
