I don't own a car and get by just fine with public transit, my bike, and the car co-op. Of course, size makes a big difference. The co-op here has over 2500 members and almost 200 cars scattered throughout the city, so finding a car nearby is usually pretty easy. Good luck getting this going. I know the co-op here is usually pretty supportive if you need any questions answered.
