Cute line for a cute dog; Transformers blown; Cardiac care two years away

I guess it may be stretching things to call a Shih Tzu a cute dog, but anyway

An 88-year-old Saskatoon woman who flung herself between a charging pit bull and her puppy says she’s grateful to be alive.

Rose Jarmon was taking her Shih Tzu for a walk in the 1100 block of Avenue J South, west of the river, when the bigger dog broke through a fence and ran toward her dog.

Jarmon threw herself in front of the pit bull to save the Shih Tzu.

“My little puppy. That’s what I was thinking,” Jarmon said. “I didn’t care about me, I’m 88, so what the heck about me, but my puppy. He’s so cute.”

Jarmon’s neighbours quickly ran out to help and managed to pry the pit bull away from her.

The CBC story doesn’t say if the Shih Tzu subsequently survived, or if it defended its human owner. The owner of the vicious dog has been charged.

The Transformers, more than meets the eye. They also need to be left alone to cool, not just to avoid unwanted electrocution. And I’m not talking about the robots, in case you were wondering. Who the heck decorates their electrical transformers??? I’m pretty sure a grade 2 student would have more sense than whatever adults have done that.

I got my followup cardiac appointment Tuesday, after waiting since about November 2006. In Saskatoon the wait time for some cardiac diagnosis care, is about 2 years according to the technician who gave me an ECG today. 24 stinking months! One month is too long to wait, never mind 24 times that long. If so many people need health care, why aren’t we focusing enough resources and employment focus on the people who can help us quickly? Why isn’t the economy serving our needs?

Regina sentence; Yorkton return; Spiderman

I drove by the courthouse Tuesday morning where inside Peter Whitmore was being slapped on the wrist with a life sentence. Outside was every major broadcast media’s vehicles, with camera men milling around before the sentence was given.

I went to Yorkton today for work. It was the first time I’ve been back since moving, and I didn’t have any recreation time left at the end of the day, so drove home in the sweltering heat. Fortunately the vehicle had air conditioning.

To escape the melting conditions of our townhouse, Ashley and I went to see “Spiderman 3″ [8/10] which may end up being more memorable than the second in the series, of which I remember almost nothing. The movie was a bit better than the board game we had been playing in the basement. The game we bought in a Walmart in South Dakota. It’s Worst Case Scenario, based on the popular books that teach survival in odd situations.

What do you do when it’s the hottest day of the year, and the Dairy Queen drive through and doorway is plugged? Bypass the food, and go straight to the movie.

I also watched “8 Heads in a Duffle Bag” [6/10] the Joe Pesci comedy about a hitman who loses his bag full of heads to an innocent man vacationing in Mexico with his neurotic future inlaws. “Mr. Deeds” [6/10] was also on TV during the weekend, and I watched it also for a second time.

12% of online Canadians read blogs daily

12% of online Canadians read blogs
… So then, why do I only see a few dozen Canadian visitors to my blog each day? Oh, right. I’m not the only blog in the world (even though I have about 4). If you’re not visiting my blog, where are you going every day? :-)

Blogging 10 years old
and I’ve only been doing it for approximately 5 years. I’ve been making web pages for 10 years though, and the Wood Mountain website has turned 10 years old this month.

Hat tip goes to Slashdot (which happens to be the oldest tech blog still popular on the web today).

Second hand smoke isn’t the only way to kill people

This story is for those people out there who think that burning drugs of any kind doesn’t come with ancillary risks, and deaths.

Careless smoking was the cause of nine house fires in [Regina], last year alone. Since 1996, it’s been blamed for 16 fatalities, and some $7.2 million in damage.

And lets not forget about the numerous forest fires and homes in the woods that are consumed because of so called “careless smoking”.

Other terms that invoke the same style of contradiction as “careless smoking”:
-reckless drunk driving
-careful klutz
-healthy poison
Any other suggestions? :-)

Can I get that in a Terminator style?

I think a Terminator robot balloon would work well for this gag. But the flying missiles are a nice bit of vehicle paraphernalia anyway.

Green Thumb Sunday - tulips

I wish these were in my garden, but instead they are noth of Saskatoon in Rosthern, beside their tourist info booth by the highway.

Yesterday it hailed, so some of my petunia’s petals were shreaded. I think the plants are going to be alright though, and got more benefit from the rain, than damage from the hail. The weather promises to be a scorcher until Wednesday though, with the temperature promising to reach +35 some days! It’s going to be a tough drive to Yorkton on Monday, even with air conditioning.

License to Wed was amusing

Ashley and I went down to the Galaxy Cinema to see the latest Robin Williams comedy called “License to Wed” [7/10]. It’s entertaining, with a few moments that are entirely too awkward to be considered top notch comedy. The shaken robot baby scene had me howling though, although the premise behind some of the scenes are enjoyment killers if you think too much.

“The Illusionist” [7/10] is what we watched Friday night on SaskTel Max’s Movie Central. The audio was horribly quiet, but with the TV turned up all the way we were able to hear the softly speaking actors, and otherwise enjoyed the story.

On our way to the theater, we stopped at CAA on south Albert St., but they had sold out of the movie ticket package I was hoping to buy. We stopped at the CAA at the other end of Albert St. but they too had sold out. So I got an oil change at Mr. Lube instead.
