There was an I Love Regina festival in Victoria Park on Tuesday at lunch time. I took my lunch kit (and forgot my camera) and walked over. When I got there, the line was about 125 people long, and I was at the very back, which never got longer than about 10 people behind me. I stayed in line anyway while I ate my lunch (moved about 10 meters the entire 20 minutes), and listened to the musical entertainment of Jack Semple (who was awesome). Michelle Higley of NewsTalk980.com was speaking for a few minutes before the music started, and I saw Mayor Fiacco being interviewed by the TV news.
I should have maybe butted in line where my friend Alvil was standing, but there were police everywhere, and I guess I couldn’t have gone to the front of the line and snatched a free bit of cake.

Just curious — other than Wascana Park, what is their to love about Regina?

There is lots to heart about Regina, If you like cities, it is one just like every other city especially Saskatoon except our city rhymes with fun. Anyhoo, if you heart Regina or not heart Regina John Fettes has a song called Young Hollywood that talks about it with irony, I have not listened to his other stuff but it might have very specific to sask. as well. http://www.myspace.com/johnfettes

Todd, there is a lot. There are better museums in Regina, including the RSM, and the RCMP, as well as Government House. The airport is newly upgraded, the bus depot is being built anew downtown, and the University is spiffed up with new facilities too. The traffic is a lot less crazy than Saskatoon if you want to compare. That may be a whole new post though.

I just remember the downtown in Regina being a lot less nice than Saskatoon’s.
Saskatoon doesn’t really have that bad of traffic. You probably encountered some of the roadwork going on via the bridge or one of the overpasses being worked on.

On the downside, our Mayor is an idiot.

Todd, Saskatoon has much worse traffic, I’ve driven both cities a lot and prefer Regina, even the dreaded Vic East box store nightmare area is better than Circle or Idylwyld.

Being a Saskatoon boy, I have to defend my home town.
There is a special energy to Saskatoon. The University is completely top notch, with one of the largest high-tech research parks in Canada attached. Some amazing work going on there, including the flagship VIDO and Synchrotron facilities which are attracting top minds from around the world. That coupled with over $100 million of investment into the University in the past decade above and beyond those two facilities. The UofS has really become the crown jewel of Saskatoon.
There is no better cultural district in Saskatchewan than the Broadway/Nutana district, with great street festivals in the summer. The best nightlife, cultural festivals, and performances in Saskatchewan bar none in terms of quality and variety. And the best restaurants in the province, again in terms of variety and quality.
The Riverbank really makes downtown amazing, with the Bessborough hotel a true architectural landmark. A huge development project (finally!) taking place on the south end of downtown river landing and some high-end loft-style condo buildings going up in downtown which will really make a big boost to the urban lifestyle in the core of the city.
Many KMs of river trails which is wonderful for those interested in outdoor activities. And some great neighbourhoods along the river including City Park, North Park, and River Heights which break away from the ’suburban cookie-cutter’ syndrome and take advantage of Saskatoon’s natural beauty.
But don’t listen to me - people are voting with their feet. Some of the traffic issue people point out are because of the major construction going on to accommodate the huge boom happening right now in Saskatoon. The population is exploding as people from across the country are re-discovering the “Paris of the Prairies”.
I shall not be petty and tear down Regina (I will leave that to others), though I will say that the one redeeming feature of Regina is the Wascana Park area. And there are better radio stations in Regina. Having traveled quite extensively in Canada, I can say without doubt that Saskatoon has the worst radio stations in the country. Thanks god for the IPod!
