Breaking news from HollywoodBoy: Saskatoon is Cold!!!
For the Junos, eTalk on CTV (one of Canada’s insufferable versions of the insufferable Entertainment Tonight) had invited Perez Hilton the famous gay Hollywood gossip blogger to cover the event. Here was his lead-up coverage of the Junos on his blog:
We are on our way to Saskatoon. Yes, Saskatoon!
Perez is flying up to exclusively cover the JUNO Awards for eTalk.
The full red carpet pre-show will be broadcast live online, so viewers from around the world can catch a glimpse of their favorite Canadian musicians, including host and performer Nelly Furtado.
The eTalk at the JUNOS red carpet show will start at 6:00 p.m. ET on the CTV Broadband Network tonight. [...]
We have some very exciting things to announce. So stay tuned!
The night of the Junos, I didn’t see any blog entry posted. Fair enough, he’s a busy man, probably doing some TV or partying.
Then, here is the last of the Juno coverage in its entirety Tuesday morning more than 24 hours after the Junos have ended:
Oh, Canada!
Filed Under: Canadialand > Personally PerezSaskatoon was cold!!!
But we had a great time!
We have now checked in to our lovely room at The Drake Hotel and are looking forward to our busy week in Toronto and the surrounding areas.
Hopefully, if you live in Canada, we’ll get a chance to see U! [...]
Wow. OK, there are plenty of posts up, so I can only guess that he has ghost writers and staff, or scheduled posts for while he’s on the road, but they do have Internet access in Saskatoon hotels, and even computers in the lobby if you have trouble with a laptop or Blackberry. Wouldn’t you think a big-time blogger would have more to say about the Juno awards on his blog than the host city’s relative temperature? Maybe he’s going to put up photos and details of the trip later. My guess is he won’t though. And my gripe with him ignoring the blog readers that made him famous would still stand anyway.
Why am I disappointed some random blogger didn’t have the courtesy to at least note more than the temperature and a general impression of my home province? It’s because millions of Americans get their news from gossip rags like Hilton’s blog, and like it or not they also form opinions about the people and places they read about. Using the most tired stereotype to describe Saskatoon when you just witnessed Canada’s Juno awards, is completely disrespectful. And yes I realize that’s the point of Hilton’s blog, but it can still hurt to see so many people buying into his little world.
P.S. Yeah it is kinda cold right now for Saskatoon in March/April. Maybe if Hilton had even one line of “news” or one picture then his stereotyping brushoff wouldn’t be quite as offensive. Say I traveled to New York to cover a taping of a special Law and Order, then updated my blog two days later only with “New York was really cold!!! But I had a great pizza.” Or pretend I’m a journalist who goes to Iraq, and I update my blog with “Iraq was really dusty!!! And there’s a war here!” Even peaceful Iraqis would then start to wish that I’d have had a close encounter with an IED to at least wake me the heck up!

Last time I was in Saskatchewan it was really dusty and cold (January and February 2006).

Tim, are you saying Sask. is like Iraq, but without the civil war? Oh, and is cold?

Saskboy, if you go to New York and have pizza and don’t bring any back for me, I’ll be irked!!!
oh yeah, between you and me, I think we can take TIM….I have my legendary nipple twist moves and you can blow some of the DUST in his eyes…… :)

I’m sure it’s not dusty and cold all year. It’s probably dusty and hot part of the year :)
I took my basic training at Dundern base, south of Saskatoon in ‘86. Seems to me it was mostly dusty and hot, just like southern Alberta.
Like you have pointed out, a one liner just can’t describe an entire province. I haven’t been there, but I understand Northern Sask. is a lot like northern Alberta.
And speaking of titty twisters, I’m a pretty good runner, so we’ll see.

Dundurn base is worn out, old, and dusty. And you know I was just givin’ you the gears over my dusty home on the range :-)

Is Dundern still in operation? I heard a rumour that they closed it.

I was at the base in 2004, but since then I can’t say for sure. I think it’s still open, I’m about 95% sure it is.

I was there in 2005. Didn’t hear anything about it closing
