Some of my readers might not have heard about Freecycle yet, and if they have, some of them might think it has something to do with biking. Well it doesn’t pertain to bikes, unless someone is giving a bike away for free. All you have to do to “freecycle” is to give something away you no longer want, for free. Or you can take something for free, and pick it up just like you’re swinging by a friends’ place to borrow that thing you really need and they have. (The major difference is, you don’t have to bring it back when you freecycle!)
To find the Freecycle group nearest to you that is already giving and taking stuff, I’ve provided the link in the first paragraph. My Yorkton group is linked here. Now you can join up, and look around your home for things you’ll never want, and have been meaning to take out to the trash, or to the Salvation Army store. Freecycle is like free garbage pickup (so long as the “garbage” is something someone could possibly make use of). I got rid of an old TV that still worked for video games, just the other day. If you give away a TV too, I’ll give you a lifetime membership in the Teleban (the parody organization devoted to Banning TV)

My lovely wife, Cathrine, is the Owner of FreeCycle Canada. She was promoted to the position late last year by the owner of FreeCycle in the USA. Cath and I have used FreeCycle quote a bit to reduce the clutter we have collected around the house over the years, stuff that was perfectly useful, old desks, our old bikes, used clothing, wine bottles, used computers that I no longer needed and didn’t have the time to fix up. Many people were in need of these things, single mothers, students, people who had a hard enough time making ends meet.
Yes, I know we could of had a garage sale and made a bit money, but it is hard enough these days finding the time to do the stuff we to get done.

I use freecycle to look for old antique cameras, which I have started collecting. I find that by the time I find something I want, someone else has always snatched it up. I’m looking for a bicycle by the way, so if you hear anything……. ;)

Great stuff. Just signed up for it. Now if I only needed bags upon bags of children’s clothes, I would be OK….

I know where to get baby stuff should I ever need it.

Rose, someone used Freecycle to get 14,000 keyboards so they could cover a car in keys.
I have a bike to get rid of, but a pedal is wonky.

Zorpheous, I agree, the time saved setting up a garage sale to make maybe only $20, is much better spent listing on Freecycle, and making someone’s day brighter with free stuff they want.
Tanya, maybe you’ll find something to give away before getting anything – that’s what I’ve done (surprised me too).

I am the list owner for Yorkton Freecycle, I am very proud of the fact someone from our city took the time and helped spread the word. I just happened to Google our city and I came up on this blog. Please feel free to let everyone you know, know about us! If you happen to be looking for that certain something feel free to ask for it in a wanted ad that is what we are about, there are many people out there that have items collecting dust in their basements and garages, and would never think to offer them. The whole point is to keep items from being sent to the trash, personally sometimes if I see a want ad, I do reply if I have the item it makes me feel good that I have helped someone out, vise versa I am thankful for anything I have ever asked for and recieved.

Hi Cheri, I used Freecycle in Yorkton to give away a few things, once to you even if I recall correctly. I’m living in Regina now, and the list here is very busy. Good luck with the Yorkton region list.

Try posting on the bulletin boards that allow notices around the city. I think most people in Yorkton aren’t aware of Freecycle, or how handy it will become when more people use it. Tell them to subscribe to the Regina list to get an idea of how active and diverse the list can get. The library has an area for notices I think you could ask at the desk about putting one up.

Just heard about free-cycle a week ago from a friend in Ponoka Ab. Will spread the word.
