“Are bloggers geeks or heroes?” asks the Calgary Herald.
The answer as John Gormley knew, was BOTH. Geeks are heroes, this is the 2000s, and geeks rule. Being a geek is so “in” that I was going to proudly profess on the radio that I’m one of the “loser bloggers” that the author M. Keren of a new book talked about. Then I decided to phrase my opposition to his stance which is wrong.

Bloggers are a lonely and isolated lot, rebels against the mainstream living in the make-believe world of cyberspace, says a University of Calgary professor in his new book.

But as quickly as Michael Keren’s assertions were released to the media, bloggers reacted with ire at what some see as an attack on their passion for writing, sharing feelings and advancing their political causes in an international arena.

Keren, who holds the Canada research chair in communication, culture and civil society at the U of C, estimates there are 60 million bloggers in the world, posting online about everything from their cats to Britney Spears to world politics.

Many, he says, are isolated, lonely and socially withdrawn, choosing to form virtual relationships in the blogosphere.

Caution to the media:
Bloggers are isolated and lonely people, so will latch onto media endorsements of their blog, like a kid on candy.
John Gormley: “Which blogs do I read? [...] I love Abandoned Stuff.”
