In Regina - at DQ and food on the road (but not the floor)

I ate at Dairy Queen in Regina, last night. While eating I saw something I hope is not indicative of how that particular location prepares the rest of its food.

There was a father and daughter looking at the frozen cakes. Some of the cakes were on sale 50% off due to them being for “Merry Christmas” a couple weeks ago. They looked at a few through the glass, then opened the wall freezer door and reaganged some to give the little girl a better look at the top of the ones in the back. They made a selection, closed the door, and started to walk away to the counter. Just then, a noise came from the cabinet, and I saw a black cake tray-bottom pinging down the front of the freezer, falling down like a pinball. I noticed then the cake, in its plastic top, resting sideways on the Treatza Pizza below. The father noticed it too, but walked away, figuring there was nothing he could do (except pay) for the fallen cake.

I needed to go up to the counter to order a dessert, and while there I intended to tell an employee, “A cake has fallen in the freezer, and when the door opens it looks like it will fall out”. I forgot to though, and when I’d turned around, already two young employees were squatting over the cake they’d “rescued”, and it looked remarkably intact. The problem was, that they’d put the cake tray on the floor by the freezer, to refit the cake, on its cardboard platter onto the plastic. Then the employee realized the tray was upside down, and FLIPPED IT OVER, to put the cake back onto it properly, snapping the plastic container on top. The remarks they were making to each other sounded like they were intending to fix the icing up and put the $20 ice cream cake back out on display. I left before I had a chance to see if they actually put it back out or not. If I’d seen it, I was going to ask the “if it were a new tray that hadn’t been on the floor,” ha.

A meal fit for Homer Simpson, but not paying customers. Mmmm, floor cake…

On Friday’s John Gormley At Night, there was a caller who said that Tim Hortons had blown his New Year’s resolution to eat better because they at least one time hadn’t prepared Yogurt Fruit cups when he’d gone to eat at the restaurant. Never mind those things aren’t as healthy for you as they say they are - although admittedly they are probably better than a coffee and donut.

John Gormley then launched into a complaint about how much he dislikes eating on the road now since he usually resorts to “chewing on beef jerky and drinking bottled water,” when he’d, “kill for a chocolate bar”. I did a double take, since the former are about the most awesome and healthy foods for you while traveling. And you can’t get much more Canadian than those two foods too, since they’ve been a travel staple for hundreds of years (pemmican and water).

On my way through Melville, I stopped at the A&W, where I bought the Swiss Veggie Deluxe. The “burger” took about 5 minutes for them to prepare, so they asked me after I had paid, to pull through the drive-through, and they’d bring me my bag when it was ready. It was like honest to goodness 1950’s dining sans tray, plus a veggie burger which I’m quite sure didn’t exist until decades later.

More on the topic of food, I ate at Luther College cafeteria with Ashley yesterday for lunch. The food was good in my opinion, and I hadn’t eaten there for years, possibly not since I’d moved out several years back. They’d reorganized a few things, and had a new milk machine. The Residence Life Coordinator recognized me so she stopped to talk for a few minutes, and mentioned she’d seen my blog on the Canadian Blog Awards, and had remembered who I was. The Luther College has a wall display of notable alumni, and while I am a Campion grad, I did live in Luther residence a few years, so they may put me up on the wall if they email me to get in touch. Dan Tysdal who I remember from my first year in Res, is on the wall naturally. CBC’s Nichole Huck is also on the wall.
