Lawsuit against Ontario and then Canada for making prostitution a crime, has been filed. If there are that many people who know about the subject in favour of decriminalization, I’m in favour of them winning. There could still be laws against pimping/operating a bawdy house that isn’t “government inspected”, or something along those lines to appease the more conservative people aghast at the idea. It will kill the pimping business hopefully, and thus make women who get involved in the sex trade more independent or safer through legal protection.

I’m sure all of saskboy’s regular readers are just waiting for me to spew forth with right-wing propaganda, but I’ve promised myself not to engage in such debates that will make more people hate me. So, um…. well, just test them for STDs before you give ‘em their “permit” or whatnot, okay?

Prostitution is already legal in Canada. Public solicitaion is illegal for such services is illegal. Prostitutes are expected to pay their taxes on their earnings and have the right to write off their capital costs.

so what does that mean ? that a hooker walking the street looking for johns is illegal, but a hooker or escort advertising in the paper is legal ?

Ross, as long as someone doesn’t “communicate” their desire to have sex for money, they aren’t being illegal, as far as I understand it, Fiumara is right. I think the lawsuit is looking for legal protection for street workers too. Ask Wendy over at her blog, she should be able to explain it best since she’s involved in the suit.

Wendy, as in that wendy cooper blog ?
WTF, is she a hooker ? JJ
but really, why is she involved ?

I wonder, will making prostitution legal take the “sheen” off the bang for the buck for many married men hooking up on the side?
Will legalizing sex for money outside the home have an impact on families? Does sex outside of home already have an impact on families? Conversely, does sex in the home equate to any monetary value?
If every Tom, Dick, Harry and Sally who want sex and have the bucks to go out ang get some become the norm, will sex become overrated? Will sex become just another thing to be bought and sold on the open market? Will legalizing bought sex make it dirty somehow?
The ramifications of this legislation haven’t been delved into in any meaningful way.

Innocent Bystander, the ramifications of the current legislation have been seen for decades, and I think the people bringing the lawsuit could best address your concerns by explaining the severe troubles sex workers experience these days. Like the black market for drugs, the illegal sex trade creates a black market for sex, where women are the victims of not only poverty and often drug addiction, but also physical abuse from pimps and johns, and no legal recourse because “they are involved in ‘crime’”. It gives them almost no way out if the either get pushed or pulled into the life. That’s the ramification we should seek a means to ending.

There are several countries in Europe where prostitution is legal, but they don’t walk the streets. Taking prostitutes off the streets and having prostitution regulated would undoubtedly make everyone safer. I don’t know for certain, but I imagine it might help to fight child prostitution as well, because it would be more visible, maybe, since underage people wouldn’t be allowed to work as prostitutes by law…

Anonymos,
Your comments come across as extremely ignorant of the situation of sex workers. To which “homes” do you propose we ship Canadian single mother sex workers to?
