Star Blanket ; Goodeve ; Oh deer

On my way back from Lipton on Tuesday I went through the Star Blanket First Nation. There were no interesting buildings aside from the school that I saw. There were “No Hunting” signs up everywhere, indicating there were either homes or industry beyond the trees lining the wide grid road.I found my way to Highway 15, and stopped for a couple minutes at Goodeve for some pictures.

North of Goodeve was this Ukranian church with a pink sunset behind it.

The sunset got brighter and pinker for another 10 minutes. Once I got onto Highway 52 headed east, I came to an intersection with a tractor waiting to turn onto the highway. I dimmed my headlights, and noticed the tractor coming up about 200m in front of me, on my right, had no cab. Right then, it felt like my left eye twitched, and I heard a whoosh like I’d just driven by a car going the other direction.

I looked around a bit too calmly for what it was, and saw in my rear-view mirror that a large buck had run across the road and hadn’t yet reached the other side. It must have run out of the bush just scant meters in front of me, because I’d been watching for animals since I’d seen a pair of deer a couple minutes after turning onto the highway. I wonder how close a deer has to get before you hear a “whoosh” when you pass it. :-| The tractor driver had seen the close call, and he looked even more stunned than I felt, as I blew past him at 100km/h.

I’ve had a few close calls before, but never a “whoosh” before. Still, I’ll take a “whoosh” over a crash with a frame twisting four legged beast any day. I’ve been road kill before, and I wouldn’t wish that fright upon any creature. Well, I wasn’t “killed”, but I’ve been on the receiving end of a bumper anyway.
