I was attempting to do a little data recovery on a dead floppy disk at work the last couple days. I tried reading the disk on several different computers. Then I tried it on Ubuntu Linux and it managed to display the file, but still wouldn’t copy the file to the hard drive. I put it in my computer and tried the chkdsk a: /f command which should fix some problems, but wouldn’t fix this one. It would still say “The floppy disk in drive A: is not formatted”.
I thought of something today. I had heard of people reading data off of crashed hard drives by putting them into the freezer to cool the electronics that had almost burned out. I reasoned that maybe contracting the floppy disk media in 4 degree Celcius temperature, might affect how the tracks line up with the head in the drive. Either that worked, or the fingers crossed technique finally worked because I was able to access the file today with the drive struggling only slightly.

Wednesday I watched “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers” [8/10]. It was a very interesting movie, about a very odd man. He lived just long enough to live during my lifetime. I’m a big fan of “Dr. Strangelove”, and “The Mouse that Roared”.
