I missed this bit of news since it was on a holiday weekend when I was helping Ashley move to Regina. It seems the Conservatives are interested in stalling environmental programs they promised this Fall until redundant consultations with the energy sectors are complete. I will give them the benefit of the doubt for one or two months longer, and then expect to see tax credits and more to help fight climate change and smog pollution as well.
Quebecers, along with most Canadians, don’t really understand the issue of greenhouse gases and how they affect the atmosphere, said Michael Cloghesy, president of the Business Council on the Environment.
So I guess because most Canadians in his estimation received inadequate science education and don’t know the difference between O3, H2O, and CO2, that means that reality doesn’t apply and it’s more important for businesses to spew out what they think is safe rather than what actually is safe for the environment we all share. Because obviously politics is more important than reality.
MacInnis said it is possible to balance the requirements of the oilpatch with the need for political support in Quebec.
“As the government looks at the political side of the issue, it also needs to look at … measures that will mitigate against the cost of compliance,” he said. “I think they can do both things.”
More important than environmental reality [which isn't even a factor in the equation apparently] is the political support a law gets from Quebecers. Isn’t that a typical Albertan attitude?… So very concerned about how a law plays politically in Quebec. He doesn’t want to pillage more of the earth than he thinks the average Quebecer wants to let him exploit.
“I think, at the end of the day, they’ll be able to come out with something where everyone buys into the process,” MacInnis said. [Italics are mine.]
As long as everyone’s buying the same BS, no one will say anything about the smell. He who smelt it, dealt it. Right? So keep your lips sealed, your gas tank filled, and enjoy the process of exploiting the earth all the way to the bank. After all, money can buy a new climate and pair of lungs, right?
Why is the exploitation of children something everyone gets worked up over, but the exploitive destruction of the future home of children is something people in government right now will bend over backwards to justify?
Thanks to Jacob for the story link.

By the time the year 2011 comes along, the Conservative’s will already have been OUT OF POWER for 4 years. Harper will be gone from 24 Sussex Drive sooner than he thinks.

Just a correction, Ozone is represented as O3 not O4. Great post otherwise. I wouldn’t give them another day to drag their heels. They have been a party since 2004 and should have environmental policy ready. There was no problem with them coming up with all their other uselss policy, like GST, Accountabilty for you not me act, and now they permit conservative lobbyist against climate change, a crappy softwood lumber deal, and childcare less childcare. They snooze, they lose.

Jay, it seems we both get to learn something about ozone today. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
And you’re quite right that the Conservatives should have had an environmental plan, Made in Canada or otherwise, ready for when they were elected. The Green Party has offered theirs, but the Conservatives want to reinvent the wheel.

Holy Crap and a half! I missed this one. Makes my blood boil.
I say we get a “fire Rona” petition going.
