I would say the first space hero that comes to mind for me is Mike Melville.

I might have said Roberta Bondar, but she only went into space, it's another thing to land on the Moon.

Miss C. my Great Grandfather had too much trouble believing the moon landing was real even though he saw it on TV. It took him a long time to cross the Atlantic, it didn't seem possible the moon was so "easy".

I would have said Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. For a Canadian astronaut I would attempt to say Bjarni Tryggvason. I've met him but damned if I could pronounce it.

I am so old. When you asked that question, I said John Glenn! Alan Shepherd! Oh wait, Neil Armstrong. Oh, too old, how about Christa McCauliffe? That was over twenty years ago! Seems like yesterday.

My kids and I just recently visited the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian, and I STILL haven't got them convinced that we went to the moon.
