Is Canada a Terrorist Haven?

The correct answer is of course: No.

Let us go back one month to a story brought to you by the US right wing government. “Canada is a haven for terrorism,” they said, and CSIS who has jobs that rely on the public being willing to spend money on forgeign and domestic threat intelligence, eagerly agreed in the media. That should be a clue, because the only time CSIS wants to be in the media, is when it serves their goals personally, not necessarily all Canadians. Did Superman want his identity and methods revealed, and to stir up a media fuss when the bad guys were underground? I think not. The real good guys don’t like media attention, they only like busting the bad guys and having the resources to do so.
Today a group of about 20 homicidal male idiots, likely manipulated by a few pursuasive adult terrorists, were caught in Ontario trying to assemble a large fertilizer bomb with an unstated target(s) in mind. The TTC seems likely to me, and also to Steve Janke.

Were these youths and adults terrorists? Most certainly they were. Does the presence of 18 arrested Fundamental-Islamic terrorists in Canada, the Khader family, and a mistaken arrest of Maher Arar make Canada a terrorist haven? No, it is not proof of Canada being a terrorist haven. Canada has problems with our immigration system allowing some people who are criminals to slip in without detection, but that doesn’t mean our immigration system is broken. {It’s broken for entierly different reasons.} Our immigration system needs more resources and also to process the obviously non-threatening immigrating grandparents and spouses of landed immigrants more quickly, so we can focus on keeping out criminals. Stop deporting families with Canadian children, and start deporting only drug dealers, gun runners, war criminals, legitimate suspects of terrorism, and mosquitoes.

What would be proof of Canada being a terrorist haven, you are probably asking now?

  1. First of all, we’d have to have terrorists. Check.
  2. Next we’d have to have a lot of terrorists here. Not so much.
  3. And we’d also have to have no way or desire to “smoke ‘em out”. Not exactly an accurate description of what happened today. Terrorists 0 - CSIS 1.

So, of the three criteria Canada only meets one of them. One of the criteria is not the shaky claim of Condi Rice that Canada is a terrorist haven. Nor is the biased claim from CSIS PR types any more reliable. And today’s events definitely don’t suggest that Canada is a “haven” for terrorists. We might have them, but they are few in number, bad at executing attacks, and are about as threatening as biker gangs or tobacco companies. In the past year, biker gangs have killed at least 8 people in a mass murder. How many people has terrorism killed in this post 9/11 Canada? Less than 8 [from my count]. How many people has smoking killed in Canada this past year alone? An estimated 45,000 have died.
Canada may be a mosquito haven, but it is not a terrorist haven.
