Friday I was in Buchanan and Canora. The temperature on the way home was +31C. I would have roasted were it not for the air conditioning.

The Canadian copyright agency, that charges libraries for having a photocopier available to the public, is releasing propaganda cartoons, in the hopes that teachers will spread misinformation about Canadian copyright legislation. I think someone should host an unauthorized mirror of their website, and see if they go after them for breaking their site’s copyright. Captain Copyright parodies are popping up all over the web.

Did you know that a portion of the monies collected in libraries photocopiers is given to Access Copyright and that, in turn, is given to writers? Do you know that writers and artists are the lowest paid profession in Canada? Do you know how many writers and artists survive on social assistance? Or how many who hold down a job (that some other person who wants it could hold) just so that they can afford to practise their calling?

Yes I did know those things :-)
What Access Copyright doesn’t seem to know is that a levy is collected on CD recordable media, and is distributed to music artists who register to collect it. Instead their propaganda neglects to mention that, and instead says it’s illegal to copy CDs in Canada [when it isn't].

I read that Michael Geist has (surprise surprise ;) ) fired back at Captain Copyright. He says: “While my first reaction to the site was that it is just silly, as I dug deeper, I now find it shameful.”
