Kamsack, Pelly, Norquay, Sask ; Found stuff ; Energuide in the kitchen with a lead pipe

I was in Kamsack Tuesday, and ate at the Subland. After my 12″ roasted chicken sub, I had a strawberry sundae which was fantabulous. The weather was hot and windy, and ice cream hit the spot.

I made a short stop in Pelly, and went on to Norquay to install some new computer equipment. The librarian had just started the other week, and the air conditioning was cooling too much. She had her sister bring over a sweat shirt, and it was someone I lived in the same dorm with in University. Small world, or just a small province actually. So small in fact that she’s moving to Calgary to get a Fine Arts job, and also to live with her fiance there.

The Conservatives have ended the Energuide program, but without any federal plan in place to help encourage home upgrades that are energy efficient. Energuide was a “Made in Canada” solution, like the kind talked about by the Conservatives regarding alternate solutions to the Kyoto protocol.

Both the NDP leader, and the Green Party are in favour of retrofitting plans even more involved than Energuide.  Implemented properly it would provide years of employment for many thousands of people, and lower Canada’s energy use which has skyrocketed since 1990. One of the Conservatives stated concerns with the Energuide program was that nearly half of the money spent was going to implementing the program.  Well even if that is the case, the money was to a good extent staying in Canada, and now we aren’t even spending the 50% we had been, on improving the environment.

“Wait until the Fall”, and we’re supposed to see “tax incentives” and other non-government run environment improving plans put forth by the Conservatives. A date for the plans to be made public has not been set, according to a Saskatchewan MP on John Gormley Live Tuesday morning. I’ll tell you when I think the Conservatives will reveal a plan that has been as effective as Energuide: NEVER. Tax incentives won’t cut it unless they save people on average $800 to improve their home in an energy efficient way. Can you really see Harper giving an $800 tax break to you, so you can live more efficiently? A reasonable person would expect at least that much of a break, since they are saving all of the money spent on Energuide, and cancelled that program because it was only giving $800 while keeping about $800 for auditing and administration.

Here’s what Harper will do if his government lasts long enough: He’ll have Rona [the Environment Minister, not the hardware store] make an announcment this Winter that a < $800 tax break incentive has been created for some insulation, furnaces, and appliances for homes or businesses. But the question remains, what will become of that other $800/upgrade the government is no longer spending? And why was the low income homeowner retrofit plan scrapped [according to someone on the radio]? And how are we supposed to believe Harper is concerned about our environment when he’s scrapped Energuide, the One Ton Challenge promotion, and ignores Kyoto? The proof is in the pudding, and right now that pudding is melting under the Canadian Summer sun.
