This morning I listened to the heart wrenching tale of a baby from Humbolt, SK named Paige, who is only 18 months old and has spent the last 3 weeks screaming when she’s awake. Her family doctor sent her to Saskatoon RU Hospital to be diagnosed, and instead they sent her home with her parents only giving children’s Tylenol as a treatment. This kind of shoddy “customer service” is something we’d expect from a retailer, not something we’d think a doctor would do to an obviously seriously ill child. It took three weeks for the parent to realize they were not being given proper treatment and sought help in Edmonton where they had a diagnosis just 24 hours later – lukemia!
Dozens of people phoned CJME.com to share their similar tales of mistreatment, while few people called in their successful treatment stories. Sask Health phoned in later and said that hospital care out of province will be paid for, but in the legislature Len Taylor the Health Minister said that the family would not get reimbursed for acting as an unscheduled ambulance for their horriblly ill child. Only an internal review by the Saskatoon Health Region has been ordered, and the Sask Party is rightfullly calling for an independent review. The government should pay the family for gas money, and hotel costs, since they already face a malpractice lawsuit in my opinion.
What is wrong with our hospitals? How can we spend so much on health care, and have people so easily slip through the cracks? I think we have too many administrators, and not enough doctors on hand. Paige’s parents were told they’d have to WAIT 3 more weeks to have a vacationing specialist see their baby, before they did the right thing and went to Alberta for treatment.
Listen to John Gormley Live Tuesday morning for what is sure to be another show with callers livid over the government’s lack of action.
Hat tip to Small Dead Animals.

CFL is finally doing what I’ve said they should do, for at least the last decade. They are going to show every game on TV, and every game is on Sirius satellite radio too!

A little humour about pot heads. And I like this title: Can’t Sleep, CBC will eat me. I’m a sucker for Simpsons quotes, and something that tells Small Dead Animal’s blogger to chill out. So what if the picture is doctored to make a funny background? It didn’t change the topic of the picture or anything important.
